Matt & I had been planning a trip to our alma mater for months.
Kristi Walker, a friend who's been in Germany for the past year, was in the area and so we planned as much into one weekend as possible: going to the Spring play, dinner with friends, coffee klatchs, and a very preliminary meeting about being dorm parents. When we left New Hampshire, Thursday, I felt like a semi had run over me. With the symptoms of a well-formed chest cold, I was afraid the dry hacking would turn to dry heaving, but I held it together just fine. Two hours into the trip, we had to stop over at a friend's (house/workplace) for the night. Elisabeth is a nanny for a family that lives "just off the highway" and welcomed us in from the snowy highway. We had a great evening chatting it up and seeing where she spends her weekdays.
Next morning we left for a 4 hour stretch to Clarks Summit, PA. We arrived mid-morning and had a lovely lunch with Kristi and a few other friends. Next we met with the Dean of Women, which turned into an interview for dorm parenting. We were psyched out that this could turn into a ministry and future home for us. We scheduled another meeting two weeks hence, and moved on to visit past profs in the building.
Two hours later found Matt in the bathroom, experiencing the flu joys. He stayed in bed while I went out for dinner & a BBC play. That night we moved him into Colin & Anita Smith's home and he spent Saturday chatting with friends and sipping juice. By Saturday afternoon we hit the road intending to spend the night at my parent's home en rout to NH.
We were absolutely miserable-- one nauseated and coughing, the other tired & still dry hacking. But 10 days later we are almost completely healthy... looking forward to moving into a new apartment & counting down to the family vacation! (may it be better than our last mini-break)
