I spoke with Mom and Dad today and found that the meeting in Laconia was a little long... (the last two weeks have been very long, so that's no surprise.)
At 8 o'clock AM, Dad and Mom arrived at Lakes Region General Hospital to meet with Dr. Friedlander, an oncologist on staff there. Approximately 4 hours later they left the appointment knowing two things;
At 8 o'clock AM, Dad and Mom arrived at Lakes Region General Hospital to meet with Dr. Friedlander, an oncologist on staff there. Approximately 4 hours later they left the appointment knowing two things;
- One - Dad has been diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma (Kidney Cancer).
- Two - Dad has an appointment on the 30th of April with an oncologist at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center who specializes in RCC. After the meeting next week at DHMC, the oncologists from both Laconia and Dartmouth are going to meet and determine the road for treatment.
I asked Mom how she was feeling after the long day. I think she is relieved to finally have a diagnosis.
Dad sounded much better tonight; he was prescribed a very good medicine to relieve the persistent cough he has. Talking to him today was much easier and he stayed on the phone quite a while.
I want to thank everyone, friends and family alike, who has supported my family in the last two weeks and who is continuing to support my Dad and Mom both present with them and in prayer and phone calls, etc.
This has been quite a trying time for me, though God has never been closer and Christ never so fair as in these last two weeks. Seeing my father physically stretched and thinned, yet so spiritually vibrant, is fantastic. (We truly are weak earthen vessels through which Christ wants to shine to the world.)
Thank you all again.

i'm so glad you finally have an answer. i bet that's relieving. how treatable is this cancer? do the dr.'s think the outcome is good? i will be praying.
Hey Matt,
Recently hopped onto your blog and read about your dad. My dad was diagnosed with cancer last September and has just completed 6 months of successful chemo and radiation. As much as we hear about it, when the C word comes to your house it's always a shocker. I'll remember your family in my thoughts and prayers.
Best,
Barry Walker
This verse has meant a lot to me personally lately- after reading your post I had to share.
2 Cor 4:15-17 "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all."
Please let your parents know we are praying for them and would call but we don't have long-distance capabilities.
